Sir Paul McCartneyMusic legend Sir Paul McCartney will receive the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song. Reportedly, the former Ex Beatle singer will be bestowed with the Prize by US Library of Congress. Previously the honor has been given to the stars like Paul Simon and Stevie Wonder.

According to a source, the prize is named on US composer brothers George and Ira Gershwin. A huge collection of the Gershwin brothers has been preserved in US Library of Congress.

On Monday, James Billington, from Library of Congress said, "It is hard to think of another performer and composer who has had a more indelible and transformative effect on popular song and music of several different genres than Paul McCartney". Reportedly, Billington has selected the British icon.

McCartney, 67, wrote his first song at the age of 14 before enjoying wild success with the world's most famous pop group. Later he also established his career in solo singing. A very close source says he will visit Washington to collect the prize in early 2010.
