Review of Kurbaan

Review of Kurbaan
Cast: Saif Ali Khan, Kareena Kapoor, Viviek Oberoi, Om Puri, Kirron Kher, Dia Mirza

Director: Renzil D’Silva

Rating: 4/5

After the Box Office success of "Wake Up Sid", everybody is eyeing on Dharma Productions next venture "Kurbaan". The film has been directed by Rensil D'Silva. And the film casts Bollywood's hottest couple Saif and Kareena in the lead. The film also stars Viviek Oberoi, Dia Mirza, Nauheed Cyrus, Om Puri and Kiron Kher.

The film is set against the backdrop of global terrorism. The movie has successfully blended a love story with a social issue like global terrorism. Before talking about the performances, music, screenplay and lyrics, we must throw some light on the story.

The story revolves around Avantika and Ehsaan (respectively played by Saif & Kareena). Avantika is a professor in Delhi University. She comes back in India from New York (there she teaches) because of her father's heart attack. Here, she meets a part-time professor Ehsaan Khan. They fall in love with each other in a very short period of time. A few months later, Avantika receives a call from her university in New York, asking her to come back for the Fall Semester. Avantika informs the news to Ehsaan. He tells her that he wants to come with her to New York, but they first need to marry.

They buy a house in an Indian neighborhood in New York. The couple gets friendly with their conservative Muslim Neighbors, Hamid and Anjum. They are invited by the families. The next morning, Salma, one of the women Avantika met the night before at the dinner, visits her under the pretext of gifting her sweets. Salma(Nauheed Cyrus) tells her that she is in danger and pleads for help. What follows next, is a series of incidents that sucks Avantika into a vortex of danger and conspiracy. Soon, she realizes that she has been trapped and thus her quest for survival starts till end. She is helped by Riyaz (Viviek Oberoi) and a journalist played by (Dia Mirza), in an effort to stop the terrorist's activities in which her husband is also included.

Now, talking about the performances I must say that Saif can be considered as a complete actor. After his brilliant performance in "Love Aaj Kal" he is again back with grey sheds in his character in "Kurbaan". The expressions he portrayed are just superb. Kareena is completely director's actor. This can be considered her best acting till today. Her acting prowess in emotional scenes reminds of her elder sister Karishma's brilliant performance in "Fiza" and "Zubeida". Vivek Oberoi has made a mark with his natural performance. One thing must be mentioned that he has a very important role in the film then why he was not shown in the promos prominently.

The much hyped sensuous scene between Saif and Kareena is not at all vulgar and it has its importance in the film. Kareena seduces her husband to steal important information from him. The scene fits the situation well and it can't be said that the scene was inserted just to add the glamour.

Om Puri, Kiron Kher and even Dia Mirza has done pretty good job in their brief roles. Every body is just perfect in the film. The film reaches the peak in the climax. The 35 minutes climax creates nail-biting situation.

The music by Salim-Sulaiman is apt for all sequences. The song Sukhran Allah by Sonu Nigam and Shreya Ghosal is very soothing to hear.

The film is worth watching. I don't want to go in any kind of debate that whether the film caters for urban class or educated one. It is a good film and we can say that Indian Cinema has reached one step forward globally.
